Amidst the chaos of various factions clashing for control, it was a sobering revelation that a city once brimming with life and culture could descend into disorder. My American upbringing had led me to perceive civilization as unshakeable; yet, the reality is stark: it must be cherished and actively safeguarded. This brings me, quite astonishingly, to endorsing Kamala Harris for president. Her leadership embodies the stability we must uphold for a thriving democracy, especially since the Trump era has dangled the spectre of disunity and chaos before us all.
A Departure from Outdated Political Ideals
Contrary to what one might think, my support for Ms. Harris isn’t rooted in allegiance to the current Republican turmoil, or a hark back to the libertarian ideals of Reagan’s era. Instead, it’s about her recognition of the vital traditions that underpin this great nation. Her adult realignment seems to move beyond the polarising identity politics and that somewhat gloomy nihilism that’s all too prevalent in academic circles today. Fundamentally, it boils down to three pillars for me: stability, unity, and optimism. You see, these concepts are essential in restoring faith in our democracy and in each other as citizens.
Understanding the Role of Government in Society
Reflecting on presidential rhetoric, I recall Reagan’s assertion back in 1981 that ‘government is the problem’. That notion, frankly, misses the mark. I mean, governments can indeed stumble over their own bureaucracy and make inadvertent mistakes in governance. But let’s not kid ourselves, it’s also a safeguard against the excesses of unbridled capitalism. Ms. Harris appreciates this delicate balance, championing the notion that government can help provide stability—something we sorely need nowadays. In stark contrast, Trump’s antics create a crisis of faith in the very institutions that are meant to protect us.
The Military and Civic Responsibility
Let’s take a moment to consider the military; it’s a bastion of civic responsibility. The sacrifices soldiers make exemplify the need to prioritise the collective good over individual pride. Trump’s derisive comments about service members—allegedly referring to them as ‘suckers’—highlight a disconnection with what true service entails. He appears oblivious to the rigours of duty steeped in sacrifices. Abiding by the necessities of a functioning democracy seems utterly foreign to him, which sets off alarm bells about his grasp on civic duty and respect.
